But common sense: digging a ditch and take as many spike in it as you can, wouldn't sounds a little bit easier?(and also much more practical--> you dont have to use extra wood and can use the digged-out earth to make your side even more unreachable) imagine that all you have to do, is drinking a "magnificent" coctail with one of those little umbrella in it and from times-to-times splash a bit of gasoline on the unlucky bastards."

This all depends on your situation. If you have lots of time Then why not build a fence? A dirt ditch with spikes is all well and good as well but after a while it is going to erode from the weather and zombies clawing at it. What you really want is something high up. Zombies can’t climb for the most part and so having an elevated area or building could be very useful.
